Licensed Betting Sites in Ghana: How to Check a Legal Bookmaker

Advertiser disclosure: we may earn a commission when you join an operator through links on this page. It never changes our scores. How we make money.

Legal betting sites in Ghana are bookmakers licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721). A licensed site names the company behind it, shows its licence details, verifies that players are 18+, and can be held to account by the regulator if it refuses to pay. Below are the sites we rate as licensed, followed by a simple routine for checking any bookmaker yourself.

18+. Offers and terms change often: always read the full terms on the operator site before you deposit.

We include an operator here only after finding licence information on its Ghanaian site or in public sources. A missing value in the licence column below means we have not yet confirmed the details, not that the site is unlicensed; equally, a value is not a substitute for your own check.

The Gaming Commission publishes a register of licensed operators. For 2026 the entries we checked are valid from 1 January to 31 December 2026, and they separate sports betting from online casino licences. Some brands hold both; a few whose sites also run casino games appear on the register for sports betting only, so we do not describe them as casino licensees. Several names that advertise to Ghanaians, including PariPesa, Linebet, Helabet and Rarabet, were not on the 2026 register when we checked.

What the Gaming Commission regulates

The Gaming Commission oversees games of chance in Ghana: sports betting, casinos, route operations such as slot machines in shops, and online gaming. Its rules cover who can hold a licence, how operators advertise, where betting shops may be located and how player identity is checked. In 2026 it ran a clampdown on betting outlets operating near schools and churches, and since 2025 it has pushed operators toward stronger identity checks, including biometric verification.

Lotto is separate. The National Lottery Authority runs the national lottery under Act 722, and private Lotto Marketing Companies need an NLA licence to sell its games. A sports betting licence does not authorise anyone to run 5/90 lotto, and the reverse is also true. Our lotto section explains that side.

How to check that a betting site is licensed

  1. Scroll to the footer. A licensed operator names its Ghanaian company and states that it is licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
  2. Compare with the regulator. Look for the operator in Gaming Commission announcements and in reputable Ghanaian news coverage. The Commission's official site is the place to start.
  3. Check the adverts. Licensed operators' adverts must carry warnings such as "Only 18+ Years" and "Gamble Responsibly" and must be approved before they run.
  4. Read the terms. A legitimate site publishes full terms, a privacy policy and a complaints procedure, all reachable without logging in.
  5. Look at the payment route. Your MoMo prompt should show the bookmaker or a named payment company, never a private person.

Offshore brands and "international" sites

Some large international bookmakers serve Ghana through a locally licensed company; others accept Ghanaian players from abroad with only an offshore licence. The second group may work smoothly for a while, but if a dispute arises you have no Ghanaian regulator to turn to. Ghana's law was written in 2006 and does not deal with online gaming in detail; reform has been discussed for years, so check for the Ghanaian licence rather than assuming any international brand is covered.

Red flags of an illegal betting site

  • No company name or licence in the footer, or a licence number that leads nowhere.
  • Deposits to a personal MoMo number, or "agents" collecting stakes by hand.
  • Promises of fixed matches, sure odds or guaranteed profit. Licensed operators are not allowed to market like that, and no honest one would.
  • Withdrawals that require an extra "release fee" or "tax" paid upfront.
  • Pressure to keep everything on WhatsApp or Telegram.

Making a complaint

Start with the operator's own support and keep everything in writing: dates, amounts, bet IDs and MoMo transaction IDs. If a licensed operator does not resolve it, you can raise the matter with the Gaming Commission of Ghana through its official channels. For each brand's support routes, see its review, for example the SportyBet customer care guide.

Licensed or not, betting is only for adults 18+. The responsible gambling page explains self-exclusion and limits, and the main betting sites ranking compares licensed bookmakers on payments and odds.

Frequently asked questions

Who licenses betting sites in Ghana?

The Gaming Commission of Ghana, under the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721). Lotto is licensed separately by the National Lottery Authority.

Is it illegal to bet on an unlicensed site?

The law targets operators rather than players, but betting with an unlicensed site leaves you without any Ghanaian route to complain or recover funds. We do not recommend it.

Does a licence mean a bookmaker will always pay?

No licence makes payouts automatic. It means the operator answers to a regulator, follows identity and advertising rules, and can be reported if it treats you unfairly.

Why do betting sites ask for my ID?

Licensed operators must confirm that players are adults and the true owners of their accounts. Ghana has moved toward stricter checks, so expect verification before your first withdrawal.
